As we move into another season, days continue to lengthen, temperatures gradually move north and often winds rise. This is time to "Beware, Take Care". The skin does not like wind. It does not like the sun and rain and elements much either, but wind soon causes rapid fluid evaporation from body surfaces. Specially the skin and eyes. As water dries up, it drags heat from the body, but also moisture from upper skin layers. This may quickly lead to dry skin, with its inevitable consequences.

Dry skin means itchy skin and the mad desire to scratch, fiddle, prod and poke. Please leave it alone or better still, avoid wind as much as possible. Cover up, but it's not yet summer, so use light weight gear.

"The Soaps"

Avoid lots of hot showers, and use a non alkaline soap such as QV Bar, pH 5.5 or Cetraphil lotion. Alkaline is terribly irritating and drying. Gently dab the skin dry afterwards, using an old soft towel. (Never throw out old towels, they have many uses.)

Apply a simple moisturiser to itchy spots at bedtime, such as a urea based one - there are heaps on the market - go for the cheapest. Drink lots of water to help replace fluid lost via the skin. Shun doonas (which recirculate heat in bed) and heavy blankets. Light weight mohair is best.

If eyes become gritty, red and uncomfortable, apply liquid tears often, and this helps settle them down. There are heaps available from the local pharmacist. So again, avoid winds if possible, or wear sun goggles if outdoors and it is very bright.

Sometimes there is also an allergy issue present. The air is continually filled with unseen spores from flowering plants, including trees, grasses and moulds. If inhaled, and indeed often when touching the skin, negative reactions occur. Like irritation, a rash, itch, the desire to scratch. Try and get indoors before sundown when spores crash to earth, burst and release their horrible contents.

Drinking lots of water also eliminates demon histamine from the blood stream, a common culprit. The less around the better. It is produced by mast cells, part of the white cells of the body, as a reaction against "allergens". Cool compresses also are very comforting to itchy skin.



We constantly hear about sea life attacking, injuring and killing humans. But surely this is provoked. If we humans desire to invade their territory, as a simple protective measure are they not entitled to lash back, if their own security is being threatened. This does not call for a "kill the shark, kill the stingray" mentality.


Every living thing, great and small, strives for survival. Whoever invades their territory is a potential predator and danger to normal life and well being. Keep away from sharks, keep away from deadly spiders and snakes and anything else that has an equal right to their own turf.

We continue to hear the nonstop denigration of arthritis medication. One by one all seem to fall into the big hole of being unsafe, causing gastric bleeding and heart disorders. Aren't they all simply pain killers under various names, with the simplest being best.


It is all about money, sad to say. New drugs are always promoted as being better, faster acting, more efficient. Usually to be blown to bits as negative and often life imperiling side effects gradually become apparent. Millions of doses may have already been taken. But new medication always attracts an enormous premium, which makes pharmaceutical companies rub their hands in glee. It is also part of the western worlds capital system, making money being the major concern, not patient welfare. Cheap paracetamol, around for fifty years, is currently the first line therapy for arthritis.

Is it safe to take antacids indefinitely?


Most simple antacids contain aluminium, and this can build up in the system over time, and has been linked long term with alzheimers disease. Many are combined with simethicone which probably does most of the good, and this is available in product such as De-gas, also good for temporary relief. However, most of these have been replaced by the PPI, (proton pump inhibitors) which chop back on secretion of gastric acid. These are considered very safe long term. Many brands are available on the PBS.

I send dozens of SMS messages, but now have sore thumb joints.


This is becoming a major issue with thousands of teenagers, as the constant over-use syndrome sets in. Calm down a bit, and give your poor over stressed and overstretched joint capsules time to relax and freshen up a bit. Massage with voltaren gel, aspirin cream or similar pain killer, and take paracetamol 500 mg x 2 up to three times a day. It will recover OK, but recur once you start and abuse the joints again. This is a "disease" of the current century, because the facility was not around ten years ago.

Do carrots really improve night vision?


Yes to a certain extent. Carrots are rich in beta-carotene. This is a vitamin first discovered in carrots hence the name This is necessary to keep the rods and cones of the retina in good health. If these deteriorate, vision, including night vision, deteriorates.
