"No way is anyone sticking a finger up my bum! It's non macho. Non Australian". Oh really. Then run the risk of not being able to have a decent pee when you want one, (or worse getting up 5 times a night) and standing for ten minutes (specially at the midnight hour on a cold bathroom tiled floor) trying and trying, until a little dribble finally comes. Then stops.

Then a minute later, the rest dribbles down your leg finally lodging between the toes as you return to bed. (It's fun, and will probably kill the tinea bugs between your toes) or worse still, same thing when you're 5000 ft in the sky, in a tin can with wings, and are nearly exploding in the region known as the pelvis. Finally, just maybe you'll then decide to check with your favourite GP.


This is what every sensible guy over 50 should have done at least annually. It's generally known as BPH - short for benign (non cancerous) prostate hypertrophy. The urine goes from kidneys to bladder until voided through a tube called the urethra which passes through a gland called the prostate. This manufactures much of the liquid in seminal fluid which escapes during an orgasm and ejaculation. With age, the prostate frequently increases in size, reducing diameter of the tube and also lessening bladder capacity. However, a certain number will advance to prostate cancer. Unless treated early, it is a one way ticket to death, and if spreads to bones, is a horribly painful way to go. Elevation of a simple blood test called PSA (prostate specific antigen) indicate the gland is growing.

This can also be felt by a simple manual (digital) examination by the doctor - mildly uncomfortable but lasting about 30 seconds. If suspicious (hard, large and lumpy), an ultrasound examination may indicate specific areas of growth, and tiny needle snippets are taken and examined for cancer. Early intervention can help. A TURP (trans urethral resection of the prostate) removes most of the prostate tissue, enabling free urinary flow. Although great care is taken, most patients experience impotence and inability to get an erection, but Viagra (and similar medication) may help.

Sexual sensations may vanish forever. Laser intervention is also gaining popularity, specially the relatively new "green tipped laser", but this leaves no tissue for microscopic evaluation. At least talk to your doctor.

It's really the male equivalent of the cervical smear test in women.



I have been dying my hair for several years. With so many brands around, and so many chemicals causing bodily harm, is there any risk of cancer from this?


Risks of cancer from currently available hair dyes is virtually non existent. Dyes are regularly used by billions of women world wide, and are considered safe. Nevertheless, 35,000 Australians die annually from cancer, and there are heaps of known and avoidable risks. Avoiding too much sun exposure, reducing intake of red meat, non smoking and avoiding passive cigarette smoke, eating a wide spread of vegetables, fruit and cereals in the daily diet, avoiding heavy drinking are just a few of "anti cancer" initiatives.

My armpits and hands perspire heavily, often smudging my work papers. I have heard botox will cure it.


Botox temporarily "Cures" many things, as it paralyses the nerves going to almost any spot. So sure, it will paralyse nerves to the sweat glands, but effects usually wear off after three months, maybe a bit longer, when you undergo the same process. Sometimes a very large sweat gland may be felt in the armpit. This may be removed by plastic surgery, and problem permanently fixed. Once cervical (neck) sympathectomy gave a permanent cure as the nerve was cut, but the arm then became uncomfortably dry, often worse than the sweat. Massaging the armpits twice a day with a damp facecloth for a few minutes may empty the glands, and is another simple measure, and costs nothing!

At what age can a girl undergo breast augmentation surgery?


Today society and peer pressure are making unreal physicals demands on girls. Best time for any breast surgery is after you have produced your last baby, whether this be No 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6. Breasts are there to feed the next generation, not to parade under the nose of others. Although kids aged as young as 16 are lining up, don't be stupid and join the queue. You will regret it later. Surgery always leaves scars and fibrous tissue, and after a few pregnancies, you'll wish to hell you'd never started it. Also, implants often become encapsulated and look and feel dreadful. Heaps of older women then want everything chopped out.

My girlfriend who does sedentary work, says stretching exercise each day makes her feel good, and free from aches and pains. But how much is enough?


Muscle and tendon stretching to any part of the body each day is great. This may be head, neck and shoulder stretches, limbs and trunk. Key issue is to say the RHS, then immediately follow the same area by the LHS. Hold in the stretch position for 30 seconds. Anything less is a waste of time. The idea is to gradually stretch the microscopic muscle fibres, as this also improves the blood flow in the area. That means more oxygen, and unwanted fatigue toxins such as lactic acid and CO2 are moved on. Even ten minutes twice a day is worthwhile. The longer time spent, the better - many continue for 30 minutes. Regularity is also essential for any lasting benefit.
